Lies

A lie is a statement made intentionally to hide the truth, mislead, or gain an advantage. Throughout history, lying has been considered negative behavior because it can damage trust between people and lead to conflict or suffering.

There are different types of lies:

  • Selfish lies — told to cover up mistakes or gain personal benefits.
  • Innocent lies (also called white lies) — told to avoid hurting someone's feelings.
  • Protective lies — told to shield a loved one from pain or a difficult situation.

Lying to Protect a Loved One

Although lies are generally viewed as wrong, sometimes people choose to hide the truth to protect someone they love. This type of lie happens, for example, when a person avoids saying something painful or hides a difficult truth to spare someone’s feelings.

These lies raise moral dilemmas because, even if the intention is good, they can still damage trust if the truth is revealed. In literature and films, this type of situation is often used to show how complicated human emotions can be and the difficult choices people make out of love.
