Guilt

Guilt is a human emotion that appears when a person feels they have done something wrong or violated certain moral, social, or personal rules. It is a natural reaction to realizing that an action, word, or decision has caused harm, injustice, or negative consequences.

Guilt can have different effects on people. Sometimes, it motivates change, sincere regret, and a desire to fix mistakes. Other times, it can lead to stress, anxiety, or deep sadness. In psychology, guilt is considered a complex emotion closely connected to conscience and personal responsibility.

There are different types of guilt, such as:

  • Moral guilt — when someone knows they’ve gone against their own principles.
  • Social guilt — when a person’s actions negatively affect others.
  • Imaginary guilt — when someone feels guilty without a real reason.

In literature, films, and art, guilt is often used as a theme to explore human nature and moral choices.
